Granada is a province of southern Spain, in the
eastern part of the autonomous community
of Andalusia. It is bordered by the provinces
of Albacete, Murcia, Almería, Jaén,
Córdoba, Málaga, and the Mediterranean
Sea. Its capital is the city of Granada.
Its area is 12,635 sq kms. Its population
is 876,184 (2006), of whom about 30% live
in the capital, and its population density
is 64.82/km². There are Roman
Catholic cathedrals at Granada and Guadix.
While it contains magnificent beaches along
the Costa Tropical the Province of Granada
attracts an enormous number of tourists due
to its Moorish architecture and culture which
is personified in the famous Alhambra Palace.
The Alhambra is a series of palaces and gardens
built in the 14th century. Alongside the
main buildings there is the Generalife, a
summer palace with fountains and gardens.
Two areas worth exploring are Sacromonte
Hill, famous for its cave dwellings where
once Granada’s gypsy population lived
and the Albacin, a labyrinth of narrow streets
and whitewashed houses with secluded courtyards
known as ‘carmenes’.
Granada shares the Sierra Nevada National
Park (in the Sierra Nevada mountain range)
with Almería province. Within the
Sierra Nevada there is the highest mountain
in the Iberian Pensinsula, Mulhacén
which measures 3,481m. In the winter the
mountains of the Sierra Nevada play host
to a small but thriving ski industry with
what is Europe's most southerly ski resort.
The southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada
are called Las Alpujarras, which contains
small villages with a clear North African
influence set in attractive valleys and terraced
fields. A recommended area for hiking.
